There are only two photographs for contact sheet #60, both taken aboard the ferry between Helsingør Denmark and Helsingborg Sweden.  I went back to look at the contact sheet in the three-ring binder and there should be more photographs to the contact sheet.  I’ll have to investigate.

I took that ferry in 1972 during the summer I spent as a Youth For Understanding exchange student to Denmark, with my host-family sister Mükke Engell and her best friend and neighbor Jens.  We were staying at a nearby summer retreat shared by the Danish Army general staff.  It gave me a quick way into Sweden, the only time I’ve visited the country.

Elsewhere there are photographs of Helsingborg, its port, and its protective battlements.

Other than the hike up from sea level to the top of the crenulated tower I have one memory of Helsingborg - going to a grocery store to get beer.  Mükke and Jens wanted a beer.  Unlike in Denmark, Sweden would not legally permit the sales of beer to 16 year olds.  Mükke got a few bottles and some snacks and went to the check out line.  When the cashier refused to sell it to us, Mükke disparaged her and Sweden and asked what would I, a world-traveling American, think of such provinciality as was displayed here?  Mükke shamed the cashier into selling us the beer.

My memory is a bit hazy after that point.  I think that we went down to the waterfront to wait for the ferry and to drink our beers surreptitiously.

Not much of a blog entry, but there were only two photos.

Those can be seen in the Photos by Number section of the website under the gallery 00060.
